CHALLENGE
A Detroit Diesel Engine Series 60, 12.7 liter was coated with Rewitec Surface Treatment. This engine had a blowby measured at over 0.8 inches of water. This is a common issue with engines with over 650,000 miles (~1.1 million Km).
The treatment consisted of 2 parts: the treatment of the top portion of cylinders through the fuel for 1 hour, and the treatment of cylinders and piston rings through the oil for 5,000 miles.
OUTCOME
A few thousand miles later, the blowby was found to be at only 0.5 inches. The engine is now fit for further use and the blowby will continue to be monitored to evaluate the total extension in engine life.
RESULTS
- With this treatment, the owner avoided $9,000 in an overhaul and over $3,000 in labor and materials for a total saving of $12,000.
- The downtime avoided for overhaul of the engine of the unit represents savings at around $6,000
- Total savings amount to $18,000.
